Celebrate World Sight Day: Protect Your Vision with OCT Imaging
This October 9th marks World Sight Day, a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of eye health. The 2025 theme, #LoveYourEyes, emphasizes the need for accessible, available, and affordable eye care for everyone, worldwide.
At Hanley’s Eyewear Boutique & Optometry, we are committed to providing comprehensive eye care to all of our patients. As part of our standard adult eye exams, we include Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging - a non-invasive, state-of-the-art technology that captures detailed cross-sectional images of your retina.
Why OCT Imaging Matters
The retina is made up of 10 intricate layers, but when your optometrist examines it using the slit lamp, only the surface layer is visible. OCT imaging allows your doctor to see the 9 additional deeper retinal layers.
It is in these deeper layers where your doctor can detect early signs of eye diseases such as:
Macular degeneration
Glaucoma
Diabetic edema (swelling)
In the early stages, these conditions often develop without noticeable symptoms, making early detection critical. This advanced retinal imaging gives our patients a head start in protecting their vision. #LoveYourEyes
For Our Senior Patients: A Special Note
Seniors are at a higher risk for eye diseases, including macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. While OHIP covers eye exams for seniors, OCT imaging is not included. We strongly encourage our OHIP covered patients over age 65 to add this imaging to their annual eye exam for a comprehensive evaluation of their eye health.
